Blessed Assurance Series Sermon #3 Walking in The Light 1 John 1: 5-7
How many of us were afraid of the dark when we were little? OK…How many of us still are?
Let me ask you this: Have you ever walked through a dark room and tripped over something you did not see?
I have done that way too many times, and to tell you the truth it is both frustrating and painful.
You know there is one sure-fire way to avoid this. DO KNOW WHAT IT IS? Turn on the light!
You can avoid the problem easily, if you simply turned on the light? Right? Think about the Christian life for a
moment. How many times have you tripped in your Christian life because you were walking in the dark?
Yet there is one way we can avoid tripping and falling. That’s by walking in the light of God’s. Psalms
119:105 105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Last week, we looked at how John was an eyewitness to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ
and therefore can be trusted. Today we are going the message John proclaimed! 1 John 1:5 This is the
message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no
darkness at all. Please note carefully the source of John’s message is Jesus, Himself. John says “The
message we have heard from Him” John is not making this message up! He is simply announcing Jesus’
message John is announcing the truth that
I. God is light. God is light means that
A. God is holy and true. He alone can guide people out of the darkness of sin. God is the
creator of light Genesis 1:3 3 Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. Where ever God is, there
is light. In fact, when John describes The New Jerusalem in Heaven he explains: Revelation 21:23
23 And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illumined it,
and its lamp is the Lamb. John does not say God is A light, but God IS light. There are not many lights, only
one. John 8:12 12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, "I am the Light of the world; he who follows
Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life."
B. What does light do? Light enables us to see where we are going. Light produces growth in crops;
Light reveals beauty and provides safety. Light helps us see things clearly.
C. Light is related to truth because light reveals the true nature of things.
Psalm 43:3 3 O send out Your light and Your truth, let them lead me; Let them bring me to Your holy hill
And to Your dwelling places. As God’s forgiven children we need God’s light and truth. Why, simply
because in the dark, good and evil sometimes look alike. /// In the light, they are seen to be as different as
night and day.
II. The Reality of darkness
A. What is darkness? If you think about it, any measure of darkness is actually a measure an
absence of light. This is like measuring cold, we measure cold by measuring the absence of heat. We measure
silence by the absence of noise. To measure ignorance is a measure of lack of knowledge. Satan and his
minions are the rulers of the darkness in this world. //// Ephesians 6:12 12 For our struggle is not against
flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness,
against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. How do you feel when you walk around
in the dark? Do you feel uncomfortable when you cannot see clearly? Do you feel uneasy or hesitant when
darkness makes it difficult to see obstacles that are in your path.
Have you ever sat in a class where you had no idea what was being taught? We would say that we are in
the dark. Right? Being in the dark is not something any child of God likes.
B. There is no darkness in God at all. //// God IS light and He is Holy and just. In other words,
God has NOTHING in common with the dark! Yet, in this fallen world there is much darkness.
As the darkness deepens there are growing segments of our society who want to eliminate God from our
society. When the light of God is removed from the world, Who will be the only ones happy with the
results? I’ll give you a hint: It is not the children of God or the children of the light.
Next let us look at verse 6 1 John 1:6 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the
darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth;
C. Christians are not called to walk in the darkness. /// Colossians 1:13 (NASB95)
13 For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son,
As born again children of God we were Baptized into His family .
1 Peter 2:9 9 But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE
FOR God's OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you
out of darkness into His marvelous light;
Ephesians 5:8 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light
If God has no darkness in Him, then neither should we. By God’s amazing grace we have been rescued
from the darkness of sin and ignorance, why would we want any part of it? Many of the problems we have in
our lives come about because we are trying to walk too close to the line with sin, sometimes We walk too
close to the edge of the cliff. To do that is a recipe for disaster.
The safest path is to stay as far away from the edge as possible? There is a difference between
struggling with sin. That we all do! and walking in darkness. What John is speaking of here is people who
deliberately choose to walk in darkness. There are times when every Christian struggles. Yes, as we are
growing in Christ there are times when we walk down a few dark alleys. But we do not want to stay there! The
Holy Spirit will not let us rest Until we repent and seek forgiveness and restoration.
III. The Blessings of Walking in the light./////1 John 1:7 7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself
is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all
sin. The verb tense of “walk” means to
A. KEEP ON walking in the light. This refers to the Christian way of life. Our standard
operating procedure as baptized children of God. Not only on Sunday mornings but everyday of the
B. Walking in The light does not mean we achieve sinless perfection. ////Ecclesiastes 7:20
Indeed, there is not a righteous man on earth who continually does good and who never sins. /// It means
we live open lives without attempting cover up our sins. ///We confess our sins to God because we trust in
His mercy and grace.////With the Help of The Holy Spirit we strive against sin.
C. Because the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin we have fellowship with God.
Cleanse” is a present tense verb which means this cleansing by Jesus blood is an ongoing process. Now wait a
minute, how can imperfect people, who struggle with sin daily, have fellowship with The Holy One?
The only reason we have this fellowship is because of the blood of Jesus. Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
This is why Jesus says: John 14:6 6 Jesus said* to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one
comes to the Father but through Me. He is the only way to God, the only way to get to heaven. John’s
message is truly a message of Blessed Assurance as he encourages to continue walking in the light. Amen
